Organizing Deaf Tenants on the Lower East Side

Fighting a Toxic Clean-Up in Seaport

“This is a community told to come back to their homes after 9/11, told it was safe,” said Grace Lee. “We’ve been lied to before.”

“The D.E.C. [Department of Environmental Conservation] and [Howard Hughes Corporation] have treated this like it’s a forgone conclusion, and we refuse to back down as parents, to make sure that our kids are going to be safe while they’re in school,” said Grace Lee.

“Now the school is required to keep all the windows open for fresh air circulation for our unvaccinated children. It’s simply not safe to do this kind of work right now,” Lee said.

Supporting NYCHA Residents

“Every family deserves a turkey for Thanksgiving,” said Grace Lee, a community advocate and donor. “We are excited to be joining the volunteers in delivering these turkeys to people’s doors today and are so grateful to Vision Urbana for providing the infrastructure and people power to make this happen. They are doing extraordinary work for the Lower East Side.”

Protesting the Chinatown Mega-Jail

“When Grace Lee headed to a public protest in a corner of New York City's Chinatown, the mother of three didn't expect to end up behind bars…

‘There's a symbolic irony to being held in jail today while protesting a jail,’ Lee, a community advocate running for State Assembly, told Insider hours after she was released from police custody.“

Rallying Against Anti-Asian Hate

“Grace Lee is afraid to leave her home at night in New York City’s Financial District.

Like many of the city’s 1.9 million Asian-Americans, Lee, 41, fears she’ll become a victim of a growing spree of anti-Asian violence. ‘I stand in the middle of the platform,’ she said, fearing she’ll be shoved in front of a subway train by a racist attacker.”

“An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.”
